In April, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will begin mailing new Medicare cards that include a new Medicare Number to protect the recipient’s identity. These mailings will be staggered throughout the year to all people with Medicare, and the current CMS schedule has Oregon residents receiving their cards sometime between April 1 and June 30.
There are four key things you can do to help your patients with this change.
- Remind your patients to bring their new Medicare cards to their appointments.
- Ask your patients to correct their address in Medicare’s records by contacting the Social Security Administration if the address you have on file is different than the address you get in electronic eligibility transaction responses. This may require coordination between your billing and office staff. Give your patients an informational sheet in English or Spanish to remind them to check their addresses.
- Display the New Medicare Card poster in English or Spanish in your office to tell your patients their new cards and new numbers are coming.
- Provide this information for your staff so they are prepared for basic questions.
